THE COMPANIES

Around the Glove is a young puppetry company that launched in 2014. We aim to explore and promote the art form of puppetry. We base our work on collaboration, craft-making and unique and playful experiences for ages 0 - 100. We believe in the power of puppets and their incredible ability to engage with audiences, as well as a tool for education and therapy. We research and play using the techniques of Bunraku puppetry, object manipulation, shadows and movement.

Vertebra is a Lecoq based physical theatre company that aims to create international devising theatre and film work. With a taste of the Absurd and the Visual Storytelling we seek to explore the interplay between the dynamics of life, imagination, myths and science creating original and socially inspired writing for stage and screen.

Sofia Calmicova

Puppeteer

Theatre is a special place, institution, life and world. Sometimes, I feel that on stage I can breathe as deeply as nowhere. Never mind, studios, which are often a black box, because many colours and light evolve through the actors', directors', technicians', and eventually the audience's presence and work. I have experienced theatre in different environments and cultural circumstances. Starting with my childhood, when my grandmother took me to see children’s plays. It was pretty cold in the theatres in Moldova, but I have never gone without a fan in my hand, subconsciously playing the role of a “grand dame.” Then moving to Germany and acting at JES Theatre in Stuttgart to then living one year in the US and working on performances at The Studio Theatre, in Washington DC. I consider it a gift to go through artistic processes, while having different cultures, mentalities and attitudes around. Therefore I am exhilarated to have practised Balinese Drama, Kecak, Noh Theatre, Indian Dance and Commedia Dell’Arte. The stage gives the opportunity to live, think, feel and act in many different ranges of life and that is what motives and excites me.

Gregory Emfietzis

Composer

Gregory Emfietzis writes music that seeks to communicate without compromise. Pieces like "DIY 1" embrace staging, lighting, and costume design to draw the drama, psychology and ritualism of performance into the musical experience. Some works, such as the miniature opera "Mirror, mirror on the wall: the crucial moment", seem written as much for actors as for musicians. Others, such as "How to… corrupt someone", are more like sonic theatre. In the shadow theatre piece "Music Impossible", the musicians themselves become puppets. As well as a composer, Gregory is the Artistic Director of the Metapraxis Ensemble (2009) and a co-founder of Underscore Duo (2011).
